I've changed the breakdown of this page into "Sessions" instead of steps. I figure that a session describes a generic block of
work, whereas a step seems to imply that there is a finite beginning, end, and purpose to a task.
With that said, a lot of work has been done. Many parts have been identified, and I've started to scratch build one piece.
Most of the work has been done on the undercarriages of both cars. The grey car is really coming along. After gluing down
the first layer of styrene with the "Household Goop", I added two more layers. I measured the master under carriage, and
sized it at .2 inches. Since I don't have any styrene that is .2 inches thick, I did two layers of .08" styrene, and one layer
of .04" to get the full .20". It worked out great. One picture to the left shows the styrene all stacked up and dremeled. I used
my dremel tool with a sanding drum to sculpt out the general shape of the undercarriage. I used the master as reference. Sadly,
the master has a lot of "wank" to it, so I am working on straightening out some of it.
In the next picture, you can see where I've sanded down the curves of the undercarriage, and it's really coming together. A lot
of work was done around the back end, making sure it lined up properly.
The last picture is of the undercarriage of the yellow car. I have started the process of layering on styrene to build up the
underneath. Unlike the grey car, this one is not going to be as thick. I'm convinced that the rounded edges that you see in the
original photo can be achieved with two layers of styrene.
During my studies of these pieces and reference photos, I've reached a new conclusion. I think the pulls that I have are
either a generation above the cars at www.lucasfrancisstudios.com, or equivalent to them. I do not believe that the yellow car
is a copy from a mold of the car seen on that website. How have I come to this conclusion? Simple. The detail on the underside
of the yellow car is simply too crisp to be a second generation mold. I beleive the mold of the yellow car was made directly
from the master pattern, prior to painting. The detail on the styrene pieces and the plastruct pieces is simply too sharp and
crisp. If it had been painted, like the one in the photos, much of the detail would be washed out. This will also eplain the
differences in the car that I have, and the one see on the francis website, namely the cover piece for the mounting rig.
Anyhow, just a theory, and not really important. Work continues.
