Session Seven

Lots of progress on both cars, though the grey car has more to show this time.

I took a stab at the fins on the grey car. Sanded the seams where the fins join to the body. These were very sloppy, as the master had been glued with superglue, then snapped off again. The resin fortification seems to be holding together nicely, as these have taken a lot of abuse lately with all the work I've been doing. The fins are very uneven. Different shapes, and one is higher than the other. I've attempted to file down the driver side wing to match the shape of the other one, but I can only do so much. I kicked around the idea of making them match perfectly, but then decided against it. This has already been a lot of work, and I don't want to make completing this an impossibility.

I filled in the holes in the tips of the wings with super glue gel. The putty I had used earlier kept snapping out when I would sand it. For those really precarious bubbles in the resin, super glue gel is the only way to go.

Here's the top of the grey car, freshly primered. It's really coming together now. Almost all of the little pits and pock marks have been sanded/puttied out, and it's looking good. The overall shape of the grey car is much more uniform than the yellow car, so it posed fewer problems. The real pain on this car is the engine, which I am saving for later.
Just a quick shot of the completed scratch built parts all lined up next to the master.
A similar pic for the yellow car. I actually have more parts for this, but couldn't find them at the time of taking this photo.

The "engines" on the right need some work. The grey parts were originally squared off on the top. I rounded them off using my disk sander to get the general shape, then a set of files to perfect them. This was actually pretty tough. Getting a reasonably round shape was not easy.

Here's the top of the yellow car. It too is really coming together nicely. Almost all of the details of the top are ironed out. Here, I am attending to some final irregularities around the hood and trunk. Once these are cleaned up, the only thing remaining is the undercarriage.
Overall, I'm satisfied with the general shape of the undercarriage. It's not identical to the original, as my curves are a little more gentle, and I also corrected some of the irregularities. There's still a pretty harsh lip toward the front of the car, which I may smooth out. You can see from this pic that there are still a few more little boogers to work out of the underside towards the front.
To make matters worse, I've just acquired a Korben taxi in the same scale as these two cars. Though there's nothing to do but paint it, it's just one more project for the heap :)
