Lara Croft Tomb Raider Belt Buckle

This was seen in the Tomb Raider movie that came out recently with Angelina Jolie.

The buckle is made out of resin, and painted to look copper or bronze. I am unsure who made it.

Though I'm not a huge fan of the movie, I did think it was entertaining. This piece was given to me as a gift by Gary Barth, the man who produces Movie Fx Magazine. I happen to do some occasional work for his website, and this was a bit of a "thank you".

There was a big controversy surrounding the belt buckle when the movie came out. There were apparently two versions of it. One had a skull and cross bones, the other one just had a skull. The story behind this is that the former version was apparently very reminiscent of a Nazi SS uniform belt buckle, which of course got everyones panties in a bunch. So Universal went back and modified all of the print ads so that the cross bones were not in the pictures. The buckle I have is a copy of that one.

I recently received this information from the make of the buckle:

The buckle itself is cold cast brass (a combination of resin to a high ratio of brass powder). By the looks of it, you should use a fine steel wool and buff it to a shine before using Brasso brass polish on it. It should look like brass once this is done.

As for history on the two versions of the buckle, the skull only (or poster version) was never made at all and only ever existed on the poster and now substituted still images from the picture. The skull and crossed bones version was the version used in production and here is the alleged story behind it's removal: http://film.guardian.co.uk/features/featurepages/0,4120,524379,00.html

Jolie apparently kept the screen used buckle as a souvenir and I supplied the replacement buckle that now sits on the screen used rigging.

Thanks for the info!!
