I got this as a gift at a Southern California Prop Party.

This is one of those pieces that I've always wanted. It's a key prop in the movie Buckaroo Banzaii. This particular piece was built up by a Hollywood pro and given to me at a prop party. Almost more interesting than the prop itself is it's history. Originally built by Greg Gein for the movie, this prop shows up in many episodes, series, and films of Star Trek. Here's a brief history: Star Trek - the Next Generation: Wesley Crusher uses it to disintegrate a rock (ST:TNG - unknown episode) Wesley Crusher uses it as an isolinear chip reader (ST:TNG - 11001001) Used as a spectral analysis device in the Enterprise's geosciences lab (ST:TNG - Pen Pals) Used as a Borg surgical instrument.
