This is a fanmade Hellboy comic book prop. This pendant was seen briefly in a miniseries published in 1997. This pendant was made for me by a very talented Hollywood prop and miniature maker, who also happens to be a friend of mine.
He has passed along the following information about the prop to me:
The Hellboy story "Almost Colossus" was indeed a 2-issue miniseries from 1997. The medallion belonged to an un-named 16th Century Romanian scientist/alchemist who dabbled in stuff kinda' like Dr. Frankenstein.
He created 2 Homunculi (plural of Homunculus, which is an artificial being), one of which was inadvertently re-animated by BPRD agent Liz Sherman via her pyrokinetic abilities. It was captured, taken to BPRD headquarters for study, found to be not such a bad dude, named "Roger" by Hellboy, and drafted into service as a BPRD agent.
Tim, the dude who made this piece for me, was also responsible for a few of the props featured on screen in the recent Hellboy movie. Too cool. Tim is a talented guy all around, but when it comes to stuff he's passionate about, he really hits 'em out of the park. Tim actually had this peice on the bench for quite some time, and was stumped about how to go about recreating the little cherub face on the front of the piece. Due to a strange piece of luck, Tim managed to stumble onto the perfect solution, and was finally able to finish up this great piece.
The pendant is made from poured, low-melt metal. Very nice. Thanks for another great addition to my collection Tim!
