As the title indicates, this is a Next Generation era cricket phaser that was custom made for me by Ed Miarecki. For those of you unfamiliar with Ed’s work, he was responsible for the construction of the Mark VII tricorders that began seeing screen time in the third season of TNG. And that’s just for starters. Please visit Ed’s website for more information about him and his work.
There’s a good little story about this cricket which proves that being a decent dude pays off. I had previously contracted Ed to build a Mark VII medical tricorder for me, which I am madly in love with. I posted pictures of the tricorder to my website, along with a little write up indicating that it was made by Ed. In order to confirm that Ed was comfortable with me disclosing the source of the tricorder, I e-mailed him a link to my page. After reading over the text of my tricorder page and approving it, Ed continued to browse through my collection. While browsing, he stumbled upon one of the oldest props in my collection, a cricket phaser purchased from a Creation Convention back in 1987, or something like that. Ed instantly recognized the piece as his work. Not a reproduction of one of his kits, but a kit actually built up by him. If you’ve seen the pictures of it, you’ll notice that all of the decals are removed, and some of the paint has been sanded off. I had originally intended to clean it up a bit, but like so many other projects of mine, it got pushed to the back burner. Now it’s almost twenty years later!!!! Anyhow, Ed saw this phaser and good a good chuckle out of the miserable condition it was in. He even teased me about my penchant for destroying his props, and asked if I had pulled the decals off my Mark VII tricorder yet!! In his disgust, Ed offered to build me a replacement cricket at no cost. Of course, I jumped at the opportunity. So, here it is. After almost 20 years of sitting on an Ed Miarecki original, I now have in my possession another one, but of much better quality. Thanks Ed!!! |
