This is probably the most accurate prop I have made to date. I will probably be posting a tutorial at some time, but for now,
it's strictly pictures.
This prop started life as a "Cabin" brand light box that can be purchased on-line. This was identified a year or two ago as the
base for the padd. It was also used as a padd base in one of the Next Gen movies.
The light box gets sanded down, and all of the surface details are removed. The ribbing on the back is 1/4 inch half round rods
from plastruct. I sanded the ends down to quarter spheres and then glued them on. The entire thing is painted with Plasti-Kote paint.
I think I used the 1004 for this.
The part I'm most proud of for this project are the greeblies. The camera on the top is something that I feel like I have contributed
to the prop community. I managed to get a REALLY good look at a real one during a studio visit, and was able to reproduce them
quite faithfully. At the time, there was a great deal of speculation going around about what the camera was made of, but I think
I was the first dude on the block to offer a faithful reproduction of it. The same is almost true for the buttons. To my knowledge,
I was the first dude to locate the buttons that were used for the show. It required some good digging, and a few aborted attempts.
However, it was later confirmed for me that I did indeed have the exact type of buttons that they use for the show. The text that
I put onto the buttons is not 100% accurate, but it looks pretty darn close.
The missing component to this project was the little label in the lower left hand corner. For a long time, no one had any idea
what it looked like. Later, someone took a picture of one of the padds on display in Las Vegas, and the final piece of the puzzle
fell into place. I used the photo to trace the design in Adobe Illustrator, matching the font and sizes as closely as possible.
However, the piece de resistance for this padd is the screen graphic. Though it is a simple design, it is 100% accurate to the
screen used graphic. For sake of privacy, I will not go into detail about how I know this, but rest assured that this screen is
dead on to the original. The fonts are exact, and the colors are identical.
The fact that this baby lights up is the icing on the cake. I'm very pleased with the final result of this project, even though
it took me a really long time to complete it.
