This is a replica of a seldom seen Hirojin hand phaser from an episode or two of Voyager. I don’t know which episode(s) this appears in, nor have I ever seen any “in action” reference for this piece. For all I know, it spent its entire on-screen time in a holster.
I acquired this piece a number of years ago, in unfinished resin form. Probably around 2002. I’ve been sitting on it ever since due to the lack of reference material available. I couldn’t find any pictures of the finished piece anywhere, so I just let it rot. Then, about six months ago, an online acquaintance traded me some reference photos for some reference material I had. I now had a good pictures of the entire finished piece. With those pictures in hand, I turned the casting over to a talented friend with free time for painting. The results are great. It looks exactly like the reference pictures. I believe the colors were nailed! If not, they sure are close.
So there you have it. A rare little piece of Trek history that hasn’t seen the light of day in a long time. I believe this piece also made an appearance on Enterprise, but in a slightly modified form. I think they chopped the front end off, and painted it different for use as a Vulcan phaser. I’m still researching this, but hope to have more info soon.
It looks to me as if the bulk of this phaser was built from a kitbashed Voyager model kit. Not the ship voyager, but one of the Kazon ships. Maybe the Torpedo. I forget. If you look at the different kits available, you can clearly make out the front cowling of the gun as the main body of one of the ships. A pretty creative use of one of the kits. I’m impressed!
