As seen in numerous episodes of TOS.
I probably spent a total of 20 hours building this.

This is a fantastic kit which is currently being offered at www.roddenberry.com. I purchased
this kit before they were available through that website, but as far as I can tell, it's
the exact same kit. This is also the same kit that is used for the build ups that are sold
through the Las Vegas Hilton, as the Star Trek: The Experience deal.
Here's a quick review of the kit: Buy it!!! It's a fantastic kit that's very well made and pretty darn accurate for the price. Though there are a few sublte differences that have been identified between this kit and the hero communicators seen in episodes like "Catspaw", this kit is pretty darn close. The one beef I had with the kit I received was that the grill was not mounted properly on its wheels. I had to pull it apart at the ends and use JBWeld to get it back together. Still, almost entirely unnoticeable. Originally, the grill would not sit flush with the body of the com when the lid was closed. I couldn't have that! I also upgraded a few parts that came with the kit. I used the real wheels for the knobs, and also used the proper material for the speaker grill. The stuff that comes with the kit is close, but not precise. I also used a different moire pattern. I know that the Edmund Scientific moire is actually the right one, but I think it's a little clunky, and there are more precise repros out there. So I sacrifice in accuracy for prettiness. Call me shallow :> This build up has no moving parts, no electronics, and no blinkies. It's pretty simple, but I wanted to actually have a finished unit in my collection, as opposed to an unfinished kit in my closet. |

Here are some pics of the com being built. Note that the mechanism that deals with the antenna flipping action is different than the one currently offered on the rodenberry.com kits. Though the new mechanism is probably easier to build and assemble, I believe this old style assembly that is on my kit is more accurate. It makes the grill sit a little higher than the center line of the com, which seems to be the case on the screen used heros also. |
