This must be the rarest tricorder of all to come out of The Next Generation. The reason it is so rare is because there is no good reference material available for the piece anywhere.
Please note that the pictures have been blurred at the request of the maker. Some of the more nefarious details are blurred, and the color has been removed. Though I'm usually a big fan of "full disclosure" on my website, I have chosen to respect the wishes of the maker, and will keep the peculiars of this piece under wraps.
This is the tricorder seen briefly in “Nemesis”. Geordi La Forge is seen using this tricorder to scan some of B-4’s parts. Because none of the details of the tricorder were shown on screen, viewers assumed this it was simply a “typical” Mark X tricorder. However, some relentless research and scouring of some unusual sources revealed some detailed pictures of the screen used tricorder, showing that it was indeed quite different from the garden variety Mark X tricorders used throughout the earlier movies and television series.
Obviously, the graphics are quite different. What you cannot tell from the photos is the fact that the lights are also very different from the typical arrangement. Published interviews with the director reveal that he wanted to see the weaponry and hand props take a different direction than what had been seen previously on screen. This concept is played out in the electronics of this tricorder.
This particular piece has sound also. Though not screen accurate, I think it’s a great touch that makes this prop that much cooler. Upon opening, the familiar ratchet sound is heard. After that, the prop breaks into the standard “Chirp/warble” noise that you hear throughout the series. The sound is crisp, clear, and loud. It’s awesome.
Truly a great piece. Excellently executed, and a wonder to behold.
