Han Solo's Blaster

As seen in Star Wars: The Empire Strikes Back.

I spent a total of about 5 hours on this prop.

Han Solo's trust blaster, the DL-44 is replicated with this piece. The screen used weapon was built using an M-96 Mauser as a base. Fortunately for us Star Wars geeks, a company name Denix produces a metal replica of this gun. It is non firing, and could never be made to fire, but is pretty nice for 50 bucks, despite its plastic grips.

I purchased the denix online, and got an upgrade kit from Yoda's House. The build up was fairly easy, but has some complications. For this kit, I had to purchase my first Tap & die set, which was a lot of fun.

Assembling this kit consisted of sawing off part of the barrel, drilling some holes, and screwing things in place. I was lucky enough to have Frank Cerney handy, who applied some weathering to the resin scope.

This was my first dealing with a denix, and I decided not to paint it. In hindsight, this was probably a mistake, but oh well.

The pistol halves on the side of the gun are resin copies of the pieces found in the Visual V-8 kit, or whatever the heck that thing is called.

I really like the heft of this prop. It feels like a real weapon in your hand. You can cock the hammer, pull the trigger, and feel a little kick back as the spring mechanism clicks into place.
