This is a replica of the Lightsaber used by Luke in the original Star Wars movie
I spent roughly half an hour converting this into the final product.

The base of the saber is a genuine graflex given to me by Frank Cerney! Thanks Frank! The graflex was in great condition, with only a little bit of rust on the inside of the upper tube, right where it gets clamped in. Interestingly enough, the bottom part of the Graflex is what I beleive to be a shortened 4 cell or 5 cell body. It doesn't have the Graflex stamp on the bottom, but it did have the spring inside. I beleive this to be true becuase the grooves that are used to thread the clamp onto the bottom half are clearly hand cut, and the top of tube is also a bit roughly cut. No big deal really, as it's still a genuine graflex part.
The saber was fairly easy to construct. I used a conversion kit from John Shields at YodasHouse, which I am very happy with. the kit consisted of the D-Ring assembly, the rubber grips, mylar tape for the band, and replica calculator bubbles for the activator box. The hardest part about assembly was drilling the holes in the bottom for the d-ring grip. This was before I had a tap and die kit, so I drilled the holes a bit too wide, and ended up bolting the screws in place from behind. I think I mis positioned the d-ring holder a bit, but it's not terribly noticeable. The grips were positioned by eyeball, and in retrospect, I regret doing it this way. I should have drawn out a template or something. Oh well. Note that the red button and glass eye are original and genuine. I have included here a series of pictures comparing the real graflex to the Larry Larbel graflex that I converted into the Empire Strikes back version of the saber. Please note that in some shots, the larry graflex looks a little shorter than the real one. this may not the case, but may simply be due to the fact that I shot them at an angle. I had an opportunity to measure the width of the two graflexes, only to find that larry's is a TAD narrower in diameter than a real graflex. Probably 1/16th of an inch, possibly less. It just occurred to me that my real graflex may indeed be longer than Larry's, but only because of the fact that the bottom of my graflex is a modified 4 or 5 cell. Perhaps the original owner didn't shorten the battery housing enough. For more information on the Luke ESB saber, please check out my Luke ESB Saber Page. |
