This is another fine Master Replicas piece that I recently added to my collection. While
I already have a Luke ROTJ saber in my collection, I thought it would be interesting to have
this licensed piece for comparison. My assumption was that any of the innaccuracies in the
fan made piece would be corrected in this "official" version. From what I have heard, Master
Replicas had full access to the LucasFilm Archives, so I think it's safe to say that this is
THE definative version.
The differences between the fan made one and the MR saber are few. The most noticeable is the fact that the grip rings on the MR saber are slightly wider than the fan made ones. There is also some difference in the color of the copper paint on the piece under the emitter. I'm not sure if this is something that was "accurized" for the MR saber, or if it was just something that was a production decision. Who knows. The other detail that has changed is the circuit board featured on the activation box. Traditionally, fan made sabers have a light colored PC board with copper strips on it. The MR version has a darker board. I'm told this was the result of seeing the hero prop at the archives. Either way, I think this is a great little saber. The one I have is highly polished, which I'm told isn't common. I guess there were two separate production runs of the saber made, where one was highly polished, the other was not. I don't know if this makes it rare, or just weird. As with the Han Solo blaster, one of the things that really makes this prop great is the presentation. The custom cut foam lined box is a real winner. I've been very impressed with Master Replicas products and I'm proud to call one of the key players in that company a friend.
