Today was R2's offical "coming out" party. My sister Jane and her husband were throwing a "family friendly" party, and they thought it would be cool if R2 could make a guest appearance. He did!
The exciting news is that I forgot to bring my digital camera, and have no photos from the event. OY!. Still, it was interesting.
The drive system ended up failing, so he just sat in one place interacting with the crowd. It was still pretty cool, but I learned a few interesting lessons.
First up is the fact that this R2 is not meant for public appearances. I spent so much time getting him perfect that it absolutely broke my heart to see kids pounding on him. They just have no concept. I can't really hold it against them, as kids tend to play rough with things. They just don't have an appreciation for how much time and money goes into something like this.
The other is that if I had it all to do over again, I'd make him lighter. I'd go with more resin parts, and a wood frame. Probably wood legs too. The all metal droid just weighs too much. I have to take him apart to move him, and then put him back together. That takes about an hour each way, and without fail, he takes some kind of damage while he's being assembled.
So I think this R2 is really just a living room decoration. I may pull out the R/C components if I make another one, but that's not on the table at this point.
