February, 2008

Who would have ever thought we could be so darn consistent in our rock and roll plans? Not I, that's for sure. This is our February session in "The Studio", which happens to double as a garage when we're not recording. I guess there's something to be said about "getting back to our roots", seeing as how the first album was recorded (for the most part) in a garage.

These pictures represent month two of the 2008 "Black and Blue" project. Today we were recording the fan favorite "Girl #134". This particular track has never received a full studio treatment, though an attempt at it was made right before I moved to Australia. Hard to believe that was more than a year ago. Wuh happun? Anyhow, it was a very productive day, and in typical fashion, we belted out the entire song in one Sunday afternoon.

Bill played guitar and bass, and also did a nifty two part harmony. I played drums, chicken shake, PIANO, and vocals. Did I do a guitar track? I forget. Either way, it was a lot of fun. The drums proved to be very challenging, and I struggled with them. But it all turned out really well. This also marked the first time in history that piano was included in a recording. It turned out really great, even though I was only playing a very rudimentary line. It really adds a lot to the song, and I'm glad we waited until the right opportunity presented itself to use this fine instrument.

Bill Fischer, looking like a fish out of water with an instrument he's not at home with.

Same thing here for me. Though I played piano for a couple of years as a kid, and picked it up again when living in Australia, I certainly don't consider myself proficient. But for some reason, as with the drums, I was able to pull it off.

Speaking of drums, I picked up a new drum stool for this practice, since before this, I was using a dinner table chair behind the drums. Here we see one of Bills kids (Erika) stress testing the new seat. I feel it's very important to imprint the youth of today with musical stuff, so that when they grow up, they too will want to start a rock and roll band. And along the way, if they choose to worship their crazy uncle Matty for his musical prowess all those years ago, so much the better.

Once Erica proved the seat safe for her weight class, we upped the ante and let Will give it a try. I actually gave Will a drum kit for his first birthday present, so the imprinting is well under way. With the band's deep rooted history of ornery drummers, I feel it's important to start grooming the next generation of My New Invention drummers to be docile and easy to push around. What better place to start than Bill Fischer's kids???
